Jeri Bjornson

Jeri Bjornson has been appointed by Winnipeg Presbytery as the Interim Minister at Sturgeon Creek United Church for a term from July 1, 2010 – June 30, 2012.

She comes to us with extensive experience in the church as a lay person and latterly, as Ministry Personnel. Since 2001, Jeri has been practicing Interim Ministry. She has extensive experience in the Courts of the church including chairing General Council task groups, Assiniboine Presbytery and a term as the President of the Conference of Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario.

Prior to beginning her work as a Lay Pastoral Minister [Designated Lay Minister], Jeri worked for several years with women’s groups in Manitoba, including as Co-ordinator of the Charter of Rights Coalition (Manitoba).

In 1991, Jeri received the YM-YWCA Woman of Distinction Award for her work advancing the status of women. She has three adult children and two grandchildren.

Rainbow Room Revival

We're Renovating!

At this years AGM, it was decided after much thought, debate and deliberation to update and renovate our basement Rainbow Room to improve

its looks
its usefulness and, most importantly
its rentability

The professional interior design firm of Grant Design Group Inc. has been contracted to give us a detailed plan/blueprint for bringing our largest basement room up to modern, functional standards. Money for this project will not come from SCUC's building fund but rather totally from fund raising efforts. To this end, a group of enthusiastic Creekers have banded together to begin the process of organizing the "Rainbow Room Revival" fund-raising campaign.

SCUC Foundation - Planned Giving

Planned Giving produces a gift made from accumulated assets rather than current income. Most common planned giving’s are made up of bequests, gifts of annuities, shares or other treasury instruments. These types of Gifts are a reflection of lifelong commitment and are included in their wills or other designated instrument.

If you are considering leaving an asset to the Foundation in your will but need the tax benefit now consider a Charitable Remainder Trust. You simply make an irrevocable gift of that asset to the Foundation. Tax credits from that gift can be carried forward if too large to use immediately. The charitable remainder trust pays you an annual income from your principal and on your death the principal reverts to the Foundation.

A History

In early 2002 a group of Church members began preparations for a planned giving program and the formation of a Church Foundation to accomplish this initiative.
These deliberations formed a resolution that was approved by the congregation at its annual meeting in 2003 to develop a Foundation at Sturgeon Creek United Church. Over the next two years a constitution was developed, an operating bylaw drafted, and in 2005 the organization was duly certified and registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and the Province of Manitoba. Through the ensuing years the Foundation has grown and supported a number of community initiatives.

The Foundation at Sturgeon Creek United Church;
•   Provides bursaries or scholarships to men and women enrolled in theological studies leading to leadership roles within the united Church of Canada.
•   Provides financial support to authorized, community focused, outreach and development activities. It will not become the primary funding agency for such programs.
•   Provide financial support to initiatives lead by recognized support agencies including Big Brother/Sisters, Scouts and Guiding.
•   Provide financial support to agencies providing services to citizens in need of food, transportation, medical assistance and other essentials not paid by other Government agencies or Departments.

The SCUC Chimers

An enthusiastic group of about a dozen people meet every Thursday morning under the leadership of Margaret Granger to make music with tone chimes.

Some are learning to read music; all are learning to play the chimes as an integral part of an enjoyable musical group. The result is lovely music that is shared with the congregation at occasional and special worship services.

Newcomers would be welcomed to this fun group.

Pastoral Care Committee

Our Pastoral Care Committee shares in the mission of SCUC to be followers of Jesus Christ by actively caring for our church members and adherents as well as others in our community.

Our active caring include:

visitation to those who are hospitalized, in care homes, or home bound,
grief support programs for those recently bereaved,
a taxi squad for those needing rides to church,
a prayer shawl ministry,
a card ministry,
and a healing touch ministry.

SCUC Healing Ministry

Healing Ministry gives love and compassion to those who are in need of healing.

Many church members, along with other persons outside our church have
benefited from sessions with our Healing Touch Ministry.

Healing Touch goes back to the time of Jesus and his disciples. There
are many familiar stories about how they used love and faith to heal.

"Healing" is distinct from "curing". It is possible to be cured without being healed,
and it is possible to be healed without being cured. Medical professions
concentrate on curing symptoms. Healing, however, seeks to repair and
restore everything that surrounds symptoms. Healing Touch can help with pain
control, neck and back problems, anxiety reductions and many more conditions.
